Today was another Flesh and Blood first for me, my first game away from my ‘home’ store. It would have been very easy for me to just carry on attending the events at EH Gaming (and I definitely will continue to play with the guys there), slowly improving and getting a few XP points each week. However, Flesh and Blood has such a vibrant community, and I wanted to be part of that too outside of York. As it happens, I am slowly starting to return to work in the office, and my main base is in Leeds. Checking out the events locator on the Flesh and Blood website, I saw that there was a regular Armory event on Tuesday evenings at the Geek Retreat store in Leeds. As Tuesday is one of the days I am due to be in the office, this seemed like a no-brainer. I contacted the store owner, Andy, before heading over to get a feel for the number and type of players they had. It seemed like they were a fairly new group who had been playing regularly for a couple of months. I had only been playing a few weeks longer, so I figured we would be at a similar level (I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of strangers). Andy also pointed out that most of the players had decent but not very strong decks. I, therefore, decided to not include the legendary cards (Vestige of Sol and Phantasmal Footsteps) in my deck.

It was a really enjoyable evening. Meeting new players is always great fun, learning how they came to Flesh and Blood from other games and how they have gone about developing their decks. It’s also interesting to see which heroes people have decided to go with and to get the opportunity to play against someone new.
It was a really successful evening for me, with three wins out of three, playing against Levia, Chayne and Kassai (who I hadn’t played against before). Most of the games were close – some a bit too close for comfort – but my Prism deck performed well, thankfully. I had tweaked it slightly from the previous event, taking out a couple of blue Heralds and adding in a couple of blue Blinding Beams to give me a little more defence against potential brute/guardian opponents. As my first opponent was playing Levia, I think this was probably a good decision. Only once in the game did I draw a hand that had no strong attack cards, but even then I was able to get an aura (Genesis) and a shield out to give me some defence. As it turned out, my opponent was keen to get rid of the Genesis, so their subsequent turn was an attack on the aura rather than me, which I think helped me out somewhat and left me with a decent hand for my next turn. The prize on the night was a lovely cold foil Ravenous Meataxe promo card.
Next week’s event in Leeds is a draft event which I am very much looking forward to.
